State College Spikes News Release

BATAVIA, NY - The State College Spikes fell to the Batavia Muckdogs in two close games on Wednesday night at Dwyer Stadium, with Batavia taking the first game in 10 innings, 2-1, and the second by a 3-1 score.

Casey Grayson delivered three hits and reached base four times in the first game. Grayson upped his average ten points to .336, putting him once again in position to contend for the New York-Penn League batting title.

The first game was decided by Giovanny Alfonzo's sacrifice fly to right to give the Muckdogs (16-27) a walk-off win. The Spikes (21-23) had taken a 1-0 lead in the sixth when Leobaldo Pina scored on Orlando Olivera's RBI groundout, but Travis Brewster tied it for Batavia in the bottom half of the inning with a run-scoring groundout of his own.

In game two, Olivera doubled in a run to cut a 2-0 deficit in half in the sixth, but Mike Pritchard was thrown out at the plate trying to tie the game. Angel Reyes, who doubled in the first two Batavia runs in the fourth to give the Muckdogs the lead, tripled in the home half of the sixth and scored on a Yuniel Ramirez sacrifice fly to complete the scoring.

Dailyn Martinez started game one for State College and allowed one run on three hits and a walk over six quality innings. Martinez also struck out two batters. Max Almonte (0-1) took the loss after allowing the Muckdogs' 10th-inning run on the only hit he yielded.

Juan Perez (4-2) struck out six batters and gave up just two runs on six hits, two walks and a hit batsman over five innings, but took the loss in the second game.

Steve Farnworth (2-2) got the win in relief for the Muckdogs in the first game after tossing two scoreless innings and striking out one batter. Batavia starter Scott Squier (3-0) earned the win in the nightcap with 5 2/3 one-run innings. Squier allowed five hits and hit a batter while striking out five.

The pair of losses snapped the Spikes' four-game road winning streak.

State College now continues a six-game road trip with the opener of a three-game series at West Virgina on Thursday. Right-hander Landon Beck (1-3) gets the ball for the Spikes in the 7:05 p.m. matchup at Monongalia County Ballpark, while right-hander Bret Helton (2-4) goes to the mound for the Black Bears.

After finishing the road swing, the Spikes return home on Sunday, August 9 to start a three-game homestand with a 6:05 p.m. game against the Mahoning Valley Scrappers (Cleveland Indians).
