West Virginia Black Bears News Release
The West Virginia Black Bears were defeated 8-5 in ten innings by the Auburn Doubledays at Monongalia County Ballpark on Wednesday night. The Black Bears rallied to tie the game 5-5 in the ninth inning but Auburn took back the lead in the top of the tenth. With the loss, the Black Bears are now 23-22 overall this season while Auburn improves to a record of 22-22.
The Black Bears jumped on the Doubledays early when 3B Daniel Arribas stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded in the bottom of the first and delivered an RBI single to center, scoring 2B Kevin Kramer to give West Virginia a 1-0 lead. In the second inning, the Black Bears got another run from DH Logan Hill who smacked an RBI double, scoring SS Kevin Newman who reached earlier in the inning on a walk and then advanced to second on a stolen base.
The scoring didn't stop there for the Black Bears. 1B Albert Baur walked to lead off the sixth inning and was bunted over to second base. CF Casey Hughston then drove Baur home on a single to give West Virginia a 3-0 lead. Going into the eighth inning, the Black Bears began to run into some trouble when Auburn scored on a throwing error which was followed by a base clearing triple by Ian Sagdal to put the Doubledays out in front 4-3. Auburn added on an extra run later in the inning on a RBI single to go up 5-3 going into the bottom half.
West Virginia instantly cut the lead to one when Hughston lined a homer to right field to make the score 5-4. Down to their last out in the ninth, the Black Bears were hoping for some late heroics and that is exactly what they got when Baur lined a ground rule double down the right field line to tie the game at 5-5. RF Maximo Rivera was up and was looking to win the game with runners on second and third but ended the ninth with a strikeout to send the game into extras.
The Doubledays jumped out to a lead in the tenth by scoring three runs on two hits, two walks and an error before the last out of the inning was made when a runner got thrown out at home.
SP Jonathan Brubaker put up his fourth straight scoreless start in 5.0 innings pitched with three strikeouts. RP Daniel Zamora relieved Brubaker by tossing 2.0 scoreless frames in the sixth and the seventh. RP Tate Scioneaux started the eighth inning but only tossed 0.1 inning and, giving up five runs (four earned) before RP Julio Eusebio was tagged with the loss (0-1) and tossed the final 2.2 innings, giving up three runs. Auburn RP Sam Johns earned the win on Wednesday night after tossing 2.0 innings of relief.
The Black Bears will now begin a three-game series at Monongalia County Ballpark with the State College Spikes on Thursday, August 6 with each game having a slated first pitch of 7:05 p.m.
