1st-Inning Outburst Leads Vermont To 9-4 Win
August 5, 2015 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
BURLINGTON, VT --- The Lake Monsters erupted for six runs in the bottom of the first inning, capped off by a Nick Collins three-run homer, and Dustin Driver tossed four hitless innings of reliever to lead Vermont to a 9-4 victory over the Staten Island Yankees in New York-Penn League action Wednesday night at historic Centennial Field.
Each of the first six Vermont batters all reached base and scored in the first. Trace Loehr led off the inning with a single and moved around to third base on back-to-back walks by Yankees starter Yoel Espinal. Then with the bases loaded, Brett Siddall lined a two-run single to center and Chris Iriart followed with an RBI single to center for a quick 3-0 lead. Collins then drilled a 1-0 pitch from Espinal over the rightfield fence for his second three-run homer in the last three games and Vermont's league-leading 26th overall.
Staten Island got two runs back in the second off Vermont starter Kevin Duchene on a Kevin Cornelius RBI double and Alvaro Noriega sacrifice fly, then added an unearned run in the fourth to cut the deficit to 6-3. Vermont got two of those runs back in the bottom of the fourth on RBI single from Richie Martin and Seth Brown, then added a Jordan Devencenzi RBI single in the fifth after Ryan Krill had an RBI single for the Yankees in the top of the inning.
Driver came on in relief to start the sixth and walked Jhalen Jackson to start the inning before retiring the next 12 Yankee batters, including five by strikeout, over his four hitless innings to earn his first-ever win in 20 professional appearances since 2013. Combined with five scoreless innings at Williamsport on July 31st, Driver has allowed just four hits over nine scoreless innings in his last two outings.
Collins was 2-for-3 with the three-run homer and Seth Brown had two hits for Vermont (18-26), which snapped a three-game losing streak overall and a four-game home losing streak dating back to their last win at Centennial on July 24th. Espinal (1-4) was charged with eight runs on five hits and five walks over 3 1/3 innings to tak the loss for Staten Island (23-20), while Cornelius had two RBI and Zach Zehner scored two runs.
The homestand continues on Thursday as the Brooklyn Cyclones come to Centennial Field to open a three-game series at 7:05 pm. The Lake Monsters will be celebrating CHAMP's Birthday pre-game and it will also be Kids Eat Free Thursday at the ballpark.
