Lowell Spinners News Release
LOWELL, MASS. - The Lowell Spinners scored early and often Wednesday night, racing out to an early lead, with position players on the mound the only thing that slowed Lowell as they cruised to a 12-0 win over the Brooklyn Cyclones at LeLacheur Park.
Lowell (24-21) got three runs in the first with a bit of two-out offense. After Jeremy Rivera led off the inning with a single, he remained at third with two outs. Victor Acosta doubled him in and came around to score on a Josh Ockimey home run down the right field line, travelling 335 feet down the line to give the Spinners a 3-0 lead.
After adding a single run in the second on an RBI force out from Rivera, the Spinners added a pair of additional runs in the third on a two-run double by Kyri Washington to extend the lead to 6-0.
The Spinners poured things on the fourth inning, chasing Brooklyn's Gaby Almonte from the game with a five-run fourth inning. Back-to-back RBI singles from Tate Matheny and Andrew Benintendi plated a pair, with another run coming in on a fielder's choice from Acosta. Washington added an RBI single and an Austin Rei sacrifice fly capped the scoring with the Spinners holding an 11-0 lead.
After scoring their 12th run in the fifth inning, the Spinners eased off the throttle with the duo of Pedro Perez and Derry's Zach Mathieu keeping the Spinners off the scoreboard for the game's final two innings.
Brooklyn (23-21) made four errors amongst other misplays to make things easy on the Spinners, but the Lowell offensive attack was firing on all counts in the 12-hit, 12-run performance. Rivera led the way atop the line-up with a three-hit game, while Ockimey starred with two hits, including his second home run, driving in three. Acosta and Benintendi added multi-hit games for the Spinners.
Jose Almonte got the start for the Spinners, allowing three hits and a pair of walks over four innings, striking out five. After Almonte hit his pitch-count, Matt Kent (4-0, 1.20) came out of the pen for four scoreless, limiting the Cyclones to one hit. He struck out four. Austin Glorius made his professional debut in the ninth, working around a two-out walk by striking out the side.
The Spinners now welcome the Connecticut Tigers to town for a three-game set beginning Thursday night. It is Jimmy Buffett Night at the ballpark with special Parrothead themed jerseys to be worn by the Spinners players and staff. The first 1,000 fans will receive replicas of the jersey before Dioscar Romero (2-2, 4.05) gets the ball for the 7:05 first pitch.
