Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release
ABERDEEN, MD-The Connecticut Tigers (21-22) took two of three games from the Aberdeen IronBirds (21-23) after they took the rubber match in the series on Wednesday night with a 3-2 win. It was the seventh win in nine games on the road for Connecticut.
The Tigers opened the scoring in the first inning. Centerfielder Victor Padron started the inning with a base hit and scored on a single by second basemen Brett Pirtle (3-5, RBI) to give Connecticut a 1-0 lead.
Connecticut struck for another run in the fourth against Aberdeen starter Jean Cosme (1-5). With one out right fielder Tanner Donnels (3-4, R) singled and moved to second on a wild pitch. He scored a couple pitches later on a RBI double by shortstop AJ Simcox (2-4, 2B, RBI).
After three innings Connecticut starter Tyler Alexander was lifted. Alexander was again brilliant as he pitched three hitless innings striking out one and walking one. Josh Heddinger (1-0) relieved him and allowed a run in his first inning of work. Designated hitter DJ Stewart walked with one out and after first basemen Steve Laurino (1-2, RBI, 2 BB) singled it was a 2-1 game.
The Tigers extended their lead with a run in the sixth but the lead was in jeopardy in the seventh. With Heddinger still on the mound the first two runners reached so Aberdeen had runners on second and third with nobody out. With one out shortstop Ricardo Andujar singled in one run to make it 3-2. However, Heddinger was able to get a pop out and a fly out to end the threat and secure the lead.
Drew Smith (SV 2) was the next man out of the pen for Connecticut and he pitched two dominant innings to save the game. Smith didn't allow a base runner and struck out four of the six men he faced.
Connecticut will play the first game of the three game series at Lowell on Thursday. The first pitch tomorrow is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
