Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
(Moosic, PA) - Scranton/Wilkes-Barre right-fielder Aaron Judge's one-out RBI single in the bottom of the 12th inning completed a comeback from 3-0 behind and pushed the RailRiders past the Pawtucket Red Sox, 4-3, on Wednesday night at PNC Field in the third of a four-game series.
Judge's high fly ball that fell off the glove of left-fielder Garin Cecchini scored pinch-runner Rico Noel from third base after Noel had stolen second and third against reliever Heath Hembree (0-5). Greg Bird began the frame with a single to right against Hembree, who allowed a walk-off run for the second time in the series.
Pawtucket built a 3-0 lead after the top of the sixth inning behind a two-run homer in the first from Quintin Berry (3) and a sacrifice fly by Humberto Quintero in the sixth. Spot-starter Edwin Escobar held the RailRiders scoreless through the first five innings.
But Scranton scored twice in the sixth and once more in the seventh against reliever Jonathan Aro, with the tying run coming on Ben Gamel's second home run of the series. The PawSox (44-74) have now dropped ten consecutive games.
Escobar allowed a leadoff single to Gamel in the sixth and was then pulled in favor of Aro, who permitted a deep RBI double to the first batter he faced Rob Refsnyder. Two batters later Gary Sanchez picked up an RBI on a groundout that scored Refsnyder and made the score 3-2.
Gamel's solo homer in the seventh (9) came with two outs, and then neither team scored a run in the next four innings. RailRiders relievers Nick Rumbelow (two innings), Caleb Cotham (one inning) and Johnny Barbato (2-0, three innings) shut out Pawtucket for the final five frames.
Pat Light pitched 2.1 scoreless innings behind Aro and Hembree then worked a scoreless 11th before allowing the winning run in the 12th. Escobar was charged with one run on only three hits in five frames, while Scranton starter Eric Ruth permitted three tallies and seven hits in six innings of work.
The finale of the series is scheduled for Thursday night with first pitch at 7:05pm. Right-hander Shawn Haviland (0-1, 7.20) will get the start for Pawtucket while Scranton counters with righty Joel De La Cruz (7-0, 3.10). Radio coverage on 920 AM (WHJJ) and also streaming online begins at 6:50 pm.
The PawSox return to McCoy Stadium on Monday, August 17th for the first of a nine-game homestand at 7:05pm, as they welcome the Syracuse Chiefs. Good seats for all the games on the homestand are available; call 401-724-7300 or visit the PawSox online at www.pawsox.com to get them now.
