SWB Game Notes

August 12, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The RailRiders secured their sixth straight win over the PawSox with a 5-2 triumph on Tuesday night at PNC Field. The RailRiders got a huge lift with a three-run homer by Aaron Judge in the sixth. The PawSox have lost nine straight. SWB stands 14 games above .500 for the first time since the then-SWB Yankees won the division in 2013 at 84-60.

WITH CONVICTION: Judge's home run was his fifth at Triple-A and his 17th overall this season. He leads the Yankees' farm in overall home runs while the next three spots are all occupied by his teammates: 2. Gary Sanchez (16); 3. Kyle Roller (13); 4. Greg Bird (12). Judge also paces the farm system with 62 RBIs. Nine of his last 12 hits have gone for extra bases including four home runs.

JUST WAIT 'TILL WE GET OUR HAYNES ON YOU: Right-hander Kyle Haynes (1-1) secured his first Triple-A win. He tossed 5.2 innings of one-run ball on three hits (one home run) and three walks while whiffing a season-high-tying six. The player to be named later in the Dec. 2013 Chris Stewart trade to the Pirates, Haynes had never pitched above Advanced-A before this season. He had started just eight games on his pro career before moving to the Double-A Trenton rotation in late May.

IT FEELS LIKE THE FIRST TIME: IL All-Star catcher Austin Romine started at first base for the first time this season. He played first base 13 times as a RailRider last season when the Yankees' current back-up catcher, John Ryan Murphy, was the regular SWB starter in 2014. He also played first base once in the bigs on Sept. 28, 2014 in a 9-5 win over the Red Sox. Romine entered that game as a pinch hitter and stayed in as the first baseman.

BAILEY BONDS: In his fourth SWB appearance, Andrew Bailey recorded his third save. He tossed 1.2 hitless innings with a season-best four strikeouts. He has held the IL to a .235 batting average while composing a 1.07 WHIP. The two-time American League All-Star and 2009 A.L. Rookie of the Year has allowed just one run while issuing only one walk during his short time at Triple-A this year.

LORD I WAS BORN A GAMELING MAN: Ben Gamel doubled to stretch the team's longest active hitting streak to 10 games. He leads the IL with 12 outfield assists and paces all of MiLB with 14 triples, two shy of the single-season franchise record set by Shane Victorino in his 2005 IL MVP season. Gamel has posted multiple hits in 10 of his last 17 games, hitting .403/.453/.746/1.200 in that time. He has lifted his overall contact clip to .300, good for sixth in the IL. He ranks among the IL's best in hits (T-3rd, 123), runs scored (4th, 64), slugging (4th, .473), extra-base hits (4th, 41) and total bases (3rd, 194).

WHO OWN DA PAW SOX?: The RailRiders have more wins against Pawtucket (11-3) than any other team this season, including a 5-0 mark in the Ocean State. They have taken 16 of the last 19 meetings going back to last season including each of the last six. The PawSox have lost nine in a row overall.

CLOSE CALLS: Ten of the RailRiders' last 21 games have been decided by one run and 14 have come down to two runs or less. SWB has gone 15-6 over its last 21 and owns the IL's best record in single-score games at 22-14 (.611).

FLYING HIGH: Greg Bird singled and scored. The current IL Batter of the Week (Aug. 3-9) has hits in 11 of 12, slashing .375/.385/.667/1.051 in that time to lift his Triple-A batting average to .300.

HOW GARY GOT HIS GROOVE BACK: Gary Sanchez singled, scored and picked Sandy Leon off of first base in the eighth. After starting his Triple-A time 2-for-11 (.182/.286/.455/.740), he has gone 25-for-66 (.379/.440/.606/1.046). He enters tonight as a .351 hitter at Triple-A with 20 RBIs in 22 games played.

UNDER MY PIRELA: Jose Pirela twice worked leadoff walks and scored. Since the All-Star break, he has hit .389/.457/.500/.957 while lifting his batting average to .344. If he had enough plate appearances to qualify (min. 2.7/team game), he would trail only Buffalo's Matt Hague (.346) in the batting title chase.
