Kelly's Slam Helps Herd Splits Twinbill
August 12, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Buffalo Bisons News Release
The Bisons and Red Wings traded big shutout wins as the rivals split a doubleheader on Tuesday night at Coca-Cola Field. Rochester yielded just three hits to take game one by a 7-0 score before the Herd stormed back to win the (very late) nightcap, 9-0.
Ty Kelly hit a grand slam as part of a five-run third inning in game two as Buffalo put a tough loss earlier in the night behind him.
The Bisons were held to just three singles in game one as Tyler Duffey spun a gem for the Red Wings for his fifth win of the season. Game two was a completely different ball game
The Herd came out swinging, scoring a pair of runs with two outs in the first inning. Matt Hague walked to keep the frame alive and Alex Hassan doubled to the left-centerfield gap before coming around to score on an Andy Burns single.
After tallying again in the second inning, the Herd opened the floodgates in the third by sending 10 men to the plate. Five would score with four coming off Kelly's slam to left field.
"The beginning of the at-bat, I was just trying to get a pitch I could hit, get the barrel out and hit something to left center," Kelly said. "Then I got two strikes and I was thinking, 'just stay up the middle' and I honestly thought he was going to throw a slider and he threw a fastball. I just reacted to it. It was accident really."
Buffalo added another run later in the third inning and again in the sixth to run away with the 9-0 win.
Ryan Tepera earned his second win of the season for the Bisons, pitching two innings and striking out two. The Herd's bullpen held on to the seven-inning shutout, only allowing one hit after Chad Jenkins started the game with three scoreless frames.
Rochester won game one on the strength of Duffey's solid start. The righty faced just one over the minimum in six innings, allowing only Hague's 29th double of the year in the fourth. He walked none and struck out five.
The Red Wings made early walks pay against Todd Redmond. Rochester had just one hit in the first two innings, but scored twice when lead off walks in each at-bat came around to score.
Any thought of a Buffalo rally was denied when the Red Wings scored four insurance runs in the seventh inning. Top propect Byron Buxton hit a two-run triple and Reynaldo Rodriguez launched his 14th home run of the season.
BISONS NOTES:
Ty Kelly's grand slam in game two was the Herd's third grand slam of the season (Chris Dickerson and Luke Scott)... Between games of the doubleheader, Josh Thole was activated off the Bisons disabled list and Sean Ochinko was placed on the DL...At 14-10, Buffalo and Rochester are tied in the Thruway Cup standings.
