Bisons Halt Rochester in 6-5 Thriller

August 12, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Buffalo Bisons News Release

The Bisons were sitting comfortably on a 6-1 lead in the ninth inning on Wednesday night. However, even with Rochester's four runs scored in the top of the ninth, the Herd held on to defeat the Red Wings 6-5 at Coca-Cola Field.

Buffalo had a 6-1 lead in the ninth, but Joba Chamberlain struggled. Chamberlain loaded the bases with a hit, walk and error, eventually giving up a three-run triple to Reynaldo Rodriguez. Ben Rowen would follow Chamberlain's outing allowing another hit, resulting in cutting the Bisons' lead from a commanding 6-1 to 6-5.

After the Herd allowed a runner on second, Rochester served a single into left field. The outfield was playing shallow, which would eventually be an advantage for Ezequiel Carrera, who threw from shallow left field to catcher Josh Thole, tagging the runner at home and saving the Bisons from a late game collapse.

"First off, Rowen down there ... you're looking for contact," manager Gary Allenson said. "You're not looking to drive a ball there and we just got through moving," the outfielders "in four or five steps. So it was a relatively easy throw but the game's on the line there. You've got to be accurate. Sometimes those throws eat up the catcher there. It's an in-between hop. I actually think Thole had to back up a bit to get a good hop and then come back up to the plate. But it was a good win."

Andy Burns had another powerful offensive outing for Buffalo. The third baseman went 3 for 4 with four RBI. Burns had two of the runs on a double in the third inning and a two-run homer in the fifth. With a single, double and home run, Burns was a triple short of the cycle.

Gary Allenson also noticed how Chamberlain continues to struggle since joining Buffalo. "He's hot and cold. He's Jekyll and Hyde," Allenson said. "At times he has nice downward tilt and gets ahead. He has a nice disappearing slider. Just doesn't seem to get in a rhythm at times. I told him when I took him out, we're gonna need you tomorrow, too. We'll see how the game evolves and stuff. Regardless its' not one guy, we've had a number of guys struggle in the last couple of weeks." Chamberlain had three earned runs on two hits with a walk and a strike out in 1/3 of an inning during his short appearance on Wednesday night.

Buffalo will wrap up their series against Rochester on Thursday with a double header, starting at 12:35. LHP Jeff Francis is scheduled to start game one for the Bisons.

BISONS NOTES:

Randy Wolf had another quality start for the Bisons on Wednesday night. Wolf improved to 9-1 overall in the win. He gave up one run on six hits with six strikeouts and one walk in six innings.
