Rochester Red Wings News Release
BUFFALO, NY - The Rochester Red Wings and Buffalo Bisons traded lopsided victories and split a doubleheader Tuesday night at Coca-Cola Park. The Red Wings took game one with a 7-0 win, the Bisons took game two 9-0.
Game one
For the second night in a row, Mother Nature decided to act up. Game one had a 1 hour, 29 minute delay prior to first pitch after Monday's game was postponed due to rain.
Tyler Duffey (5-6) was spectacular, facing one over the minimum in six shutout innings as Rochester knocked off Buffalo 7-0. It was Duffey's first start since making his Major League debut on July 5 in Toronto. Tuesday, against the Blue Jays Triple-A team, he surrendered his first and only hit on a two-out double from Matt Hague in the fourth inning. A man reached with one out in the third inning but Duffey erased him with a double play. He didn't issue a walk while striking out five.
The first two men of the game walked against Bisons starter Todd Redmond (1-4). Danny Ortiz then drove in Byron Buxton with a double but Reynaldo Rodriguez, who had reached on fielder's choice, was thrown out at the plate for the second out. The Wings took a 2-0 lead on an Eric Farris sacrifice fly in the second. Argenis Diaz added an RBI triple in the fourth to give Rochester a 3-0 lead heading to the seventh inning.
The Red Wings added four runs in the seventh to cap the scoring at 7-0. Buxton tripled in two runs with a line drive to left-center field, James Beresford drove him in with a sacrifice fly and Rodriguez followed with a solo homer.
Aaron Thompson gave up two, two-out singles in the seventh but tossed a scoreless frame.
The shutout was the 15th of the season by the Rochester pitching staff, most in the league.
Game two
The Red Wings wasted plenty of early scoring opportunities and paid the price in a 9-0 setback in game two. Rochester had two hits in each of the first three innings and added a walk in the first against Bisons spot starter Chad Jenkins but the Wings went 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position and left two on in each of the first three frames.
Buffalo, of course, capitalized with two in the first, one in the second and five in the third to take an 8-0 lead against Jason Wheeler (1-7). Six of the eight runs were earned with the big blow coming on Ty Kelly's grand slam in the third.
Cole Johnson allowed an inherited runner to score in the third but was solid in relief, surrendering one run on three hits and two walks with a strikeout in 3.0 innings. Farris entered with the bases loaded and one out in the sixth inning and gave up a sacrifice fly but retired the next batter in his professional pitching debut. He is the third Red Wings position player to pitch in a game this season joining Brock Peterson and Ryan Wheeler, both of whom have since been released.
Rochester and Buffalo are still an identical 60-57 and sit 5.5 games behind division-leading Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The teams meet Wednesday for one game before playing another doubleheader on Thursday.
