Charlotte Knights News Release
(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) - LHP Greg Smith tossed seven solid innings, Cedric Hunter homered and drove home four runs, and the Gwinnett Braves beat the Charlotte Knights by a score of 11-1 on Wednesday in game three of the four-game series from BB&T Ballpark in Uptown Charlotte.
Smith (6-4, 2.23) was impressive on Wednesday, scattering five hits over seven strong innings and retiring the final eight batters he faced en route to his sixth win of the season. The 11-year minor league veteran improved to 3-0 with a 0.82 ERA over his last four starts. He's now allowed just two earned runs over last 22 innings pitched.
A product of LSU and a former 6th-round pick of the Arizona Diamondbacks, Smith has also made 40 starts in his major-league career, appearing in 32 games with the Oakland A's in 2008 and eight with the Colorado Rockies during the 2010 season.
Offensively for the G-Braves, eight of the team's nine batters had at least one hit, while five batters had at least two hits apiece. Daniel Castro recorded three hits and three RBIs for Gwinnett, who has now won two of the three games in the series.
Charlotte starter Scott Carroll (5-3, 3.38) allowed seven runs (six earned) on 12 hits over four innings of work and was saddled with loss. Terance Marin came on in relief of Carroll and allowed one run over three innings. Onelki Garcia followed with a scoreless frame, before giving way to Miguel Chalas, who allowed a three-run home run to Hunter in the ninth.
Charlotte's only run came in the bottom of the fourth inning off the bat of third baseman Matt Davidson. The 24-year-old went 1-for-4 at the plate with his team-high 19th home run of the season. Overall this year, Davidson ranks second in the International League in home runs. The Knights combined to record six hits on the evening.
The two teams will conclude their four-game series on Thursday from BB&T Ballpark with a 7:05 p.m. game. RHP Erik Johnson (8-8, 2.58) gets the nod for the Knights against Gwinnett RHP Victor Mateo (1-0, 2.25). Gates open at 6:00 p.m. and fans 21 and over can enjoy $3 domestic drafts for Thirsty Thursday, presented by Hickory Tavern.
