Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
Moosic, Pa. - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (Triple-A/New York Yankees) earned their fourth walk-off win of the season, outlasting the Pawtucket Red Sox 4-3 in 12 innings on Thursday night at PNC Field. The RailRiders (67-52) won their seventh in a row against the PawSox (44-74).
Aaron Judge finished the night with three hits, but none were bigger than his last. Greg Bird opened the deciding frame with a single to left off reliever Heath Hembree (0-5). Rico Noel was inserted as a pinch runner for Bird and stole his way to second and third. After Gary Sanchez lined out to shallow center, Judge lifted a fly ball to the left gap. Left fielder Garin Cecchini could not make the grab and Noel scored the winning run.
Johnny Barbato (3-0) led a stellar effort from the RailRiders bullpen, hurling three scoreless, hitless innings. Barbato combined with Nick Rumbelow and Caleb Cotham to retire 18 of the last 20, including nine straight by Barbato.
The RailRiders got a quality start from Eric Ruth in his return to Triple-A. The right-hander allowed three runs on seven hits over six innings.
The PawSox built a 3-0 advantage going into the bottom of the sixth, but SWB mounted a rally to tie the score. Ben Gamel singled to chase starter Edwin Escobar. Rob Refsnyder drove a double into the left-center alley off reliever Jonathan Aro to score Gamel. Refsnyder came around on a pair of groundouts to cut the deficit to one, 3-2.
With two away in the seventh, Gamel crushed a long home run to right for the tying run. It was his ninth of the year.
The RailRiders go for the four-game sweep of the Pawtucket Red Sox (Boston Red Sox) on Thursday night. First pitch at PNC Field is set for 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Joel De La Cruz (7-0, 3.10) opposes right-hander Shawn Haviland (4-6, 4.37).
