Toledo Mud Hens News Release

The Hens took the field for an afternoon game at Victory Field in Indianapolis on Wednesday against the Indians. Headed into the matinee, Toledo had lost its last six road games and looked to put that stat in their rearview and get back to winning ways. Toeing the rubber for the Hens was Shane Greene, making his first Hens start since being optioned from the Tigers on August 9th. The right hander headed into the game with a 1-1 record in his previous stint with the Hens, carrying a 3.42 ERA into Wednesday's game.

Taking the mound for the first place Indians was another guy with plenty of big league experience in Chris Volstad. The two lanky right handers each had their quality stuff working for them on Wednesday as the offenses were kept in check for the first four inngs of the ballgame. The Hens offense finally broke the scoring drought in the top of the fifth off the righty Volstad. Marc Krauss got the frame started with a leadoff single and went first to third on a one out single from Hens spark plug Corey Jones. With one out, and Krauss at third Jeff McVaney struck a sac fly to left plating the game's first run for Toledo.

The Indians responded in their half of the fifth, tying the game on a RBI single from Gorkys Hernandez, scoring Steve Lombardozzi. The run was the only scoring surrendered by Greene on the day, as he was masterful in his first AAA start back from Detroit. Greene exited after 5.0 innings surrendering one run in three hits, striking out four. In the sixth the Hens put another run on the board as Mike Hessman trecked around the bases for his just thrid triple of the season, scoring Daniel Fields on the play. However, the Indians responded once again as Willy Garcia plated Indy's second run off Rafael Dolis on an RBI fielder's choice, tying the score.

The Toledo lineup carried momentum to the top of the seventh, having scored in the previous two frames and it paid off against Volstad. With a tied score and two on for the Hens Josh Wilson struck his twelfth double of the season as Corey Jones scored, taking a 3-2 lead. Daniel Fields followed the run scoring double with a sac fly of his own sending Jeff McVaney home and extending the lead to 4-2. The bullpen held down the Indy offense for the remainder of the game as Jose Valdez and Rafael Dolis combined to throw innings six through nine allowing just a single run. Valdez earned his third save of the season.

The Mud Hens and Indians wrap up their short three game series tomorrow at 7:05 PM at Victory Field in Indianapolis.
