Idaho Steelheads News Release
Boise, Idaho - Salmon Kings defenseman Steve Lingren scored just 37 seconds into the extra session, as Victoria bested the Steelheads, 3-2, in front of 4,581 fans at Qwest Arena on Friday night.
Rushing into the Steelheads zone, two-on-one, Lingren took a feed from Mike Wirll skated in alone on Steve Silverthorn (39 saves). He deked to his backhand and slipped the puck through the rookie's legs for the game-winner, and his 15th of the year, to lead all ECHL defenseman. Ryan Wade also added an assist. It's the second time this season that Lingren has beaten the Steelheads with an overtime winner (11/19/05 at Victoria, 3-2).
Garett Bembridge's ECHL-leading 30th goal of the season was the only tally for either side in the first period. Mike Stutzel and Marty Flichel assisted on his power play marker, coming at 14:12 of the first period. From behind the Salmon Kings net, Stutzel got to Flichel's missed shot and found Bembridge at the side of the crease. His shot banked off the side of goaltender B.J. Boxma (23 saves). It was 12th man advantage goal of the year and his third in the last six games.
There was no scoring in the second period. However, late in the frame Boxma came out due to an injury to his right hand (blocker side). Rob McVicar (14 saves), the winning goaltender from the first game of this two-game set, replaced Boxma with under four minutes left in the second frame.
The shots were 32-26 in favor of the Salmon Kings after 40 minutes of play, yet the Steelheads led 1-0.
The Salmon Kings scored twice in the third to take the lead, before Bembridge answered with his second of the game at 17:07 of the stanza. Stutzel found Bembridge alone in the slot, and he beat McVicar past his blocker to tie the match at 2-2.
With the defeat, the Steelheads have now lost four consecutive contests on home ice, while dropping the season series to the Salmon Kings (3-4-1). Silverthorn (10-9-0) has dropped six straight games, while McVicar (6-6-0) reached .500 with the win. The shots were even at one apiece in overtime, and the Salmon Kings out-shot the Steelheads for the first time in eight meetings this season, 42-39.
The Steelheads return to action on Friday, January 20 against the Fresno Falcons. It's the first of three straight games. Faceoff is at 7:10 p.m. MST. All the action can be heard live on ESPN Radio 1350 AM, KTIK "The Ticket" beginning approximately 20 minutes prior to the drop of the puck.
