Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Victoria, BC - "Fish fest part three" opened up in Boise, Idaho, as the Salmon Kings traded triple scoring streaks with the Steelheads. The Salmon Kings netted the win, 7-5.

The Salmon Kings opened the scoring in the first as Victoria Captain Ryan Wade soared down the right wing and snapped a shot past the left pad of Idaho Goaltender Matt Yeats, and extended his point-scoring streak to six games. At first intermission, it was a 1-0 lead for Victoria.

The second period delivered five goals in the first 11 minutes.

After a few whacks at a bouncy puck, Salmon Kings Defenseman Simon Mangos finished with a tap in and put Victoria ahead 2-0 just 53 seconds into the period. Just over four minutes later, Victoria Centre Mike Wirll scored his tenth goal of the season, after picking up a rebound from a Ryan Wade shot.

The Steelheads traded goaltenders at the 5:04 mark of the second period-Matt Yeats (1-2 against Salmon Kings this season) out and Steve Silverthorn (2-1 against Salmon Kings this season) getting the nod.

This began a four unanswered goal stretch by the Idaho Steelheads. ECHL points leader Garett Bembridge, Defenseman Mike Gabinet, and Defenseman Jeremy Mylymok each tallied a goal in the second period to tie the game 3-3.

At 1:46 into the third period, Steelhead Winger Marty Flichel gave the home team its first lead of the night on a breakaway wrist shot. But just over one minute later, Vernon B.C. native Lanny Gare tied the match 4-4 off a drop pass from Jade Galbraith.

After penalties were handed out to Idaho's Greg Hornby and Mike Gabinet, the Salmon Kings had a five-to-three man advantage and capitalized twice. Victoria Veteran Steve Lingren chalked up another to remain leading scoring defenseman on the squad, and Lanny Gare beat Silverthorn for his second goal of the night, which turned out to be the game winner.

Victoria native K.C. Timmons snagged his 15th point of the season with a cushion goal at 7:43 remaining in the third period to put the Salmon Kings up 7-4. Center Kevin Gardner brought the Steelheads within two when he found the back of the net with 1:36 remaining in the game.

The Salmon Kings finished two for four on the powerplay while the Steelheads converted one of their five opportunities with the man advantage, in McVicar's fifth win of the season. Idaho out-shot Victoria 39-25, but was handed its third home loss in four games against the Salmon Kings this season.
