Iowa Cubs News Release

ST. PAUL, MN - The Iowa Cubs (4-1) dropped their first game of the season by a score of 6-2 to the St. Paul Saints (3-2), Friday at CHS Field.

Iowa got out to an early start for the second straight night, getting on the board in the second inning on an RBI single from Jared Young. They held a 1-0 lead until the bottom of the fourth inning, when Kyle Garlick doubled home a leadoff walk to tie the game.

That was the only run the Saints would score against Riley Thompson in his Triple-A debut. Rowan Wick relieved Thompson and St. Paul took their first lead of the game in the home half of the fifth on a solo home run from Hernan Perez.

They padded their lead with three runs in the sixth on a bases loaded double play and a two-run home run from Mark Contreras. Iowa got a run back on a sacrifice fly from Young in the top of the seventh, but a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the inning grew the Saints' lead back to four, at 6-2.

The I-Cubs stranded the bases loaded in the seventh and eighth innings and could not get anything going in the ninth, as Brock Stewart struck out the side to hand Iowa their first loss of the season.

POSTGAME NOTES:

Riley Thompson went 4.0 innings, allowing one run on one hit and one walk while striking out six in his Triple-A debut.

Iowa's top three hitters went 0-for-12 with eight strikeouts and two walks. As a team, Iowa struck out 14 times, going 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position and stranding nine runners on-base.

Yonathan Perlaza was just a home run shy of the cycle, going 3-for-3 with two runs scored, a double, triple and a walk. He had half of Iowa's six hits as a team.

Iowa and St. Paul are scheduled to play games three and four of their shortened five-game series at CHS Field tomorrow, with first pitch of the double header set for 1:07 PM. For more information and tickets, visit www.iowacubs.com.
