Vancouver Giants News Release
Red Deer, AB - Ty Ronning scored his second goal of the night with 1:01 left in overtime to lift the Vancouver Giants to a 6-5 win over the Red Deer Rebels at the ENMAX Centrium on Saturday night. The G-Men end their five game road trip with four victories. Chase Lang had two goals to extend his point streak to 12 games while Alec Baer and Dakota Odgers also found the back of the net.
Adam Helewka opened the scoring for the Rebels early in the first, beating Vancouver goalie Ryan Kubic with a deke to the backhand. Lang tied the game for the visitors from the slot, but Helewka restored Red Deer's lead before the end of the stanza.
The Giants scored three unanswered goals in the second period to go ahead 4-2. Lang netted his second of the night on a 2-on-1 before Baer cashed in on the power play after a scramble in front of the Red Deer goal. Odgers added his name to the score sheet, completing a beautiful passing play from Jack Flaman and Owen Hardy. Michael Spacek scored before the end of the frame to pull the Rebels back to within one goal.
Ronning bagged his first goal of the night on a man advantage in the third period, tipping a Matt Barberis shot past Red Deer goalie Trevor Martin. The Giants held the lead until the final minute when the Rebels pulled the goalie and got goals from Helewka, completing his hat-trick, and Ivan Nikolishin to send the game to overtime. Nikolishin's equalizer came with 11.5 seconds remaining on the clock.
Ronning got the winner late in the extra period after finding Ben Thomas with a pass from the right corner. Martin got a piece of Thomas' shot, and Ronning poked it across the goal line to give the Giants the victory.
Ryan Kubic stopped 43 of 48 shots to pick up the win in the Vancouver crease.
Vancouver's next home game is on Friday, January 15th against the Everett Silvertips at the Pacific Coliseum. Puck drop is at 7:30pm. For tickets, go to TicketLeader.ca or call 604.4.GIANTS (604.444.2687).
