Chiefs Fall Behind Early in 7-2 Loss to Regina

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Spokane Chiefs were outscored 4-1 in the first period and couldn't recover as the visiting Regina Pats ran away with a 7-2 win at Spokane Arena on Saturday night. Ethan McIndoe and Hudson Elynuik scored for the Chiefs.

Regina opened the scoring with a shorthanded goal from Austin Wagner at the 9:47 mark of the first period. The goal, assisted by leading scorer Adam Brooks, was his 16th of the season.

The Pats expanded their lead to 2-0 with a power play goal scored by defenseman Connor Hobbs at the 12:56 mark, assisted by highly rated NHL prospect Sam Steel. Jared Freadrich tallied his second of the season on a slapshot through traffic just 17 seconds later to put the Chiefs behind 3-0.

Spokane finally broke through at the 16:18 mark of the opening frame with a power play goal of their own. Hudson Elynuik took a feed from Keanu Yamamoto and fired it low from the left wing to cut the lead to 3-1.

Regina made it clear that they were not giving up the lead with their fourth goal of the period, scored by Brooks, with 2:11 left. The goal, his 23rd of the season, capped the period and sent the Chiefs to the locker room with a 4-1 deficit.

Steel scored his first of two goals at the 3:54 mark of the second period, assisted by Lane Zablocki and James Hilsendager to extend the Pats' lead to 5-1.

McIndoe scored his fifth of the season with a backhand flick on a rebound opportunity created by defenseman Evan Fiala's shot at the 4:03 mark of the third frame to make it a three-goal game.

Steel responded with his second of the night and 15th of the season, this time on the power play with 13:11 left in regulation to push the Pats' lead back to four goals.

Wagner scored his second of the night to cap the scoring with 8:16 left in the game, assisted by Freadrich.

Tyson Verhelst started in goal for the Chiefs and stopped 8 of 12 shots faced in 20 minutes. Lasse Petersen replaced Verhelst after the first intermission and stopped 17 of 20 shots. Jordan Hollett started for the Pats and turned aside 26 of 28 faced.

The Chiefs finished 1-for-5 on the power play and 2-for-4 on the penalty kill.

The Chiefs remain at home Sunday night to host the Everett Silvertips on Special Olympics Night at Spokane Arena.
