January 10, 2016 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Everett Silvertips News Release
KENT, Wash. - Mathew Barzal scored twice, including the game winner 35 seconds into the extra session to help the Seattle Thunderbirds stave off another rally by the Everett Silvertips, 3-2 in overtime before 4,049 fans at ShoWare Center on Saturday.
The overtime was the first for the Silvertips this season, coming after they rallied out of a 2-0 hole late in the second period. Remi Laurencelle and Matt Fonteyne scored for the Silvertips, who improved to 7-2-1 in the last nine road games to maintain their lead on first place in the U.S. Division.
Keegan Kolesar buried a rebound for a 1-0 Seattle lead at 7:10 and Barzal followed with his 10th goal, off the rush at 14:41 of the first period. The Silvertips stabilized their game in the second period and outshot Seattle,
14-12 in the middle period. Carter Hart's most impressive save arguably came off a close range bid by Cavin Leth.
Laurencelle converted Dawson Leedahl's feed and stashed a backhanded deke past Landon Bow with 11.6 seconds left in the second period, and Matt Fonteyne tied the game when he beat Bow over the shoulder with a snapper at the left circle just 1:47 into the third period.
Barzal nearly went coast-to-coast for the winner, converting a snap shot from the mid slot just 35 seconds into overtime.
Hart took the overtime loss with 24 stops.
