Rodriguez, Rain Wash Out Mets 7-0
July 6, 2011 - Eastern League (EL1)
Portland Sea Dogs News Release
Binghamton, NY- It was a different day, but the same result for Reynaldo Rodriguez. The first year Sea Dog went deep in his first two times at the plate on Wednesday night, leading Portland to a 7-0 win over Binghamton in a rain-shortened six innings. Rodriguez also homered in his final at-bat in Tuesday night's doubleheader. Chih-Hsien Chiang and Tim Federowicz also added an RBI each in Wednesday's win. Brock Huntzinger (5-7) tossed five scoreless innings to get the win.
After a 15-5 shellacking of the Mets in the second game of the doubleheader Tuesday, the Sea Dogs wasted no time in getting the lead Wednesday night. Jeremy Hazelbaker hit an infield single to lead off, and Alex Hassan was hit by a pitch. Then, Chiang ripped a double down the right field line to score Hazelbaker. Binghamton starter Matt Harvey battled back to strike out Will Middlebrooks. Rodriguez followed with his fourth home run in a Portland uniform to give the Sea Dogs a 4-0 first inning lead.
The Columbia native made it 7-0 Portland in the third inning. Chiang doubled to start the frame and Middlebrooks singled to put runners on the corners. Federowicz drove in Chiang with a sacrifice fly. Then, Rodriguez sent Harvey's pitch over the left field wall for his fourth and fifth runs driven in on the night. It's the second time that Rodriguez has had 5 RBI with the Sea Dogs. The other time came on June 21st against the Trenton Thunder.
Heavy rains came during the bottom of the sixth inning. The tarp was put on the field right after the inning ended and the game was eventually called after a one hour and eighteen minute delay. There was a brief stoppage in the weather for about a half hour, but another wave of rain came in and the game was called.
The Sea Dogs wrap up their series with the Mets tomorrow afternoon. Then, Portland heads to New Hampshire for a four-game series with the Fisher Cats before the All-Star Break. After the break, the Sea Dogs are back at Hadlock for a seven-game homestand starting July 14th. That night will also feature a Clay Buchholz Bobblehead giveaway.
