Irwin Dazzles at Home as Curve Notch Win

July 6, 2011 - Eastern League (EL1)
Altoona Curve News Release

CURVE, Pa. - Phil Irwin (3-1) tossed 6.2 innings while Brock Holt went 2-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored to help Altoona to a, 4-1, win over the Akron Aeros on Wednesday night at Blair County Ballpark. The win for Altoona snapped a five-game home losing streak as the Curve hadn't won at home since the last time Irwin was on the mound on June 19th vs. Harrisburg.

Just like on Tuesday, Altoona plated a run in the first inning to jump on the scoreboard first. Holt had the first of his two hits in the game in the first with one away and came home two batters later when Andrew Lambo drove him in with an RBI single.

The Curve's second and third runs came home as part of a two-run third that saw seven men bat in the inning. Greg Picart was hit by a pitch to start things off but Starling Marte followed with a strikeout for the first out of the inning. Holt came up with the one-out hit as he drove in Picart with a single after he stole second earlier in the at bat.

Josh Rodriguez singled and moved Holt to third before Lambo came to the dish again and hit a sac fly to make it, 3-0 Curve. All told, Lambo finished the game 1-for-3 with two RBI and has driven in six runs in his past four games.

Joe Beimel once again tossed an inning to start the game for Altoona on Wednesday night and used just six pitches to retire Akron in order. He turned it over to Irwin in the second and Irwin dazzled through his 6.2 innings pitched. Beimel and Irwin combined to face the minimum amount of batters through the game's first seven innings of work.

After giving up a leadoff single in the third, Irwin did not surrender his next hit until the leadoff man Michel Hernandez singled to start the eighth. It was a stretch of 14 in a row set down by the Germantown, Tenn. native. He did permit a run in the eighth on a two-out double by Tyler Cannon but it would be the only run he'd allow on the night.

Michael Dubee tossed the final 1.1 innings in the game and did not allow a hit while striking out three for his fourth save of the year.

Quincy Latimore was 1-for-4 to extend his season-best hitting streak to eight games. Travis Scott drove in Altoona's other run in the game with a triple in the sixth inning.

The Curve (37-47) will try and earn a series split with Akron (43-43) beginning at 7 p.m. on Thursday night at BCB. It will be a Thirsty Thursday presented by Rocky 104.9 at BCB in the series finale game with Akron. Fans will be able to get $2 16oz. Miller Lite drafts and $1.50 small sodas during the game on Thursday night.

Thursday night is also the second night of the Nittany Travel Summer Cruise Series at BCB as the first 500 fans 21 & up will receive a pair of Tighty Whitey's to commemorate Tom Cruise's role in the 80s sensation 'Risky Business'. Fans must keep the Tighty Whiteys and bring them along with the Aviators (already given away on June 16), the shot glass courtesy of Yuengling Lager (July 21) and the foam football (Aug. 4) to the game on September 4th vs. Richmond to be entered into a drawing for one cruise for four courtesy of Nittany Travel.

The Legends of County Music Tour participants, David Ball, Billy Dean and Bryan White, will be in attendance on Thursday night as well to take in the Curve game and sign a few autographs.
