Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release

RICHMOND, VA - The Richmond Flying Squirrels, in conjunction with the Eastern League of Professional Baseball Clubs, have announced that catcher Johnny Monell has been added to the Western Division roster for the 2011 Northeast Delta Dental Eastern League All-Star Game. Monell joins LHP Eric Surkamp, RHP Justin Fitzgerald, 2B Charlie Culberson and OF Roger Kieschnick, as Squirrels' representatives in the game, which will be contested at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium in Manchester, NH, on Wednesday, July 13th.

Monell was added to the roster due to a back injury to Akron Aeros' catcher Chun Chen. Monell is currently batting .240 (58-73), with a team-best nine home runs and 35 RBIs. His 35 runs batted in are second on the club to fellow all-star, Kieschnick (41).

A 25-year old native of the Bronx, NY, Monell is currently touted by Baseball America as the #28 prospect in the San Francisco Giants' system. Originally a 30th round draft selection of the Giants in 2007, Monell was named the Most Outstanding Player in the 2010 California League Post-Season, helping the San Jose Giants to the league title.

The Squirrels continue their four-game series against the Trenton Thunder at 7:05 PM on Wednesday night at The Diamond. For tickets or more information, please visit SquirrelsBaseball.com.
