Florence Y'alls News Release

The Freedom had two three-run leads but River City rallied for seven unanswered runs to top Florence 9-5 last night at T.R. Hughes Ballpark.

The Freedom scored an unearned run against Rascals starter Zach Sterner in the first. With two out and the bases empty, Jarred Frierson reached on an error by shortstop Bobby Burk. Chris Curley and Drew Rundle followed with singles, with Frierson scoring on Rundle's hit to make it 1-0.

Junior Arrojo and John Malloy hit RBI singles in the second to give Florence a 3-0 lead. The Rascals responded in the bottom of the third against Freedom starter Alec Lewis. Doug Sanders hit a two-out RBI double and Jason Patton followed with an RBI single to cut the lead to 3-2.

Juan Valdes hit a two-run blast in the fourth to push the lead back to three at 5-2. He now has three of his five home runs this season at T.R. Hughes Ballpark.

The Rascals tied the game in a pivotal fifth inning. With the bases loaded and two out against Lewis, Joash Brodin lifted a fly ball down the left field line. Freedom left fielder Jarred Frierson stumbled as he hit the warning track and was unable to make the catch, an error that cleared the bases and tied the game at five.

The flood gates opened in the sixth as the Rascals exploded for four runs on five hits to take a 9-5 lead. Danny Sawyer, Jason Patoon and Stephen Holdren all knocked in runs in the inning.

Lewis (1-4) took the loss, allowing eight runs, five earned in five innings. Sterner (8-1) picked up the victory as he gave up five runs but just three earned in eight frames.

The series continues on Thursday night at 8:05 p.m. ET. Jeff Frost will take the mound for Florence.
