Sauget, Ill. - Gateway smashed three solo home runs in taking a 6-2 lead over River City and held on for a 6-5 win, fighting off a ninth inning comback effort from the Rascals, ending their season-high win-streak at eight games.

The loss did not worry Rascals' skipper Steve Brook. "It was a good streak and I guess it finally had to come to an end. The Guys enjoyed it, they're having fun going to the ballpark. We'll just have to go out and start another one tomorrow."

River City (43-16) took a 2-0 lead in the second on a Jareck West homerun, his third in as many games, but the Grizzlies (25-34) countered with a Charlie Lisk solo jack in the bottom of the frame and took the lead 4-2 with a three run outburst in the third.

Rascals' starter Zack Robertson (6-1) allowed six runs on six hits in five innings of work while walking three with two strikeouts in his first loss. Gateway added a solo homerun in the fourth and fifth for a 6-2 lead but the Rascals battled back.

Chad Maddox hit his ninth homerun, a two run shot in the seventh, to trim the lead to 6-4 before Gateway closer Chris Enourato, who gave up the two-run homerun in the tenth last night, came in to pitch the ninth.

Three singles in the ninth plated a run to close the deficit to 6-5 but with two on, including the tying run at second, Enourato struck out Stephen Holdren to end the game.

The Rascals square off against the Florence Freedom to begin a three-game series Wednesday at T.R. Hughes Ballpark as All-Star Zack Sterner (7-1) takes the ball.
