River City Rascals News Release
O'Fallon, Mo. - River City scored seven unanswered runs to come back from a 5-2 deficit, improving their second-half record to 11-2 by knocking off the Florence Freedom by a final of 9-5.
The Rascals (44-16) looked sloppy early as the Freedom (27-33) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second. River City plated two runs on three hits to close within one before Florence added a two-run homerun in the fourth for a 5-2 lead. The Freedom defense allowed River City back in the game and the offense took over from there.
With the bases loaded and two outs in the fifth, Joash Brodin lifted a ball down the left field line that was dropped, the second misplay by Florence in the inning, tying the game at 5-5. River City opened the fifth with three straight singles before Jason Patton and Stephen Holdren hit back-to-back two out doubles to give the Rascals a 9-5 lead after the sixth inning.
Zack Sterner (8-1) gave up just two hits after the homerun in the fourth, getting through eight innings while allowing five runs (two earned) on seven hits with five strikeouts and three walks. The eighth win for Sterner put him in a three-way tie atop the Frontier League.
Don Lisi pitched the ninth to close out the game.
Game two is set for tomorrow with a 7:05 first pitch. Florence will send right hander Jeff Frost (0-3, 9.64) to the mound against the Rascals' Wayde Kitchens (0-0, 13.50).
