Southern Illinois Miners News Release
MARION, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners have acquired former all-star first baseman Ernie Banks in a trade with the Washington Wild Things in exchange for reliever Joe Taralllo and the Miners 2012 first round draft pick.
"Ernie can bring a lot of energy to the dugout and has already been here so he knows how we do things," Miners Manager Mike Pinto said. "He told me he was excited to go to a team in contention so I think he will be a nice addition for us right now."
Banks is currently hitting .207 with two home runs and 13 RBIs in 42 games with the Wild Things this season. Both of his home runs have come in the last week.
"Ernie can be a big force in a lineup," Miners Manager Mike Pinto said. "With a couple of our big bats on the injured list, it was important for us to bolster our lineup right now. Ernie has proven he can hit successfully and we think a change of scenery might help him and help us. He has been hitting the ball well as of late and hope he can continue that with us."
Banks began the season with the Miners in 2010 and battled injuries to hit .246 with four home runs and 23 RBIs in 29 games before being traded to Sioux City of the American Association on July 12, 2010. In the American Association he hit .346 with 11 doubles, three home runs and 22 RBIs in 36 games.
He had his best season in the Frontier League in 2009 when the all-star hit .353 with 24 home runs and 75 RBIs in 77 games combined between Washington and River City.
Southern Illinois signed Tarallo earlier this week after he was released by the Florence Freedom. The rookie has posted a 3.38 ERA in 16 relief appearances this year. As a Miner he made two appearances and allowed two runs off four hits in three and two-thirds innings.
