Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
CRESTWOOD, IL- The Traverse City Beach Bums committed a season-high five errors and allowed six runs in a decisive sixth inning as they fell to the Windy City Thunderbolts in game one of a three-game series at Standard Bank Stadium by a score of 11-5.
The loss drops the Beach Bums to three and a half games back of the first-place Joliet Slammers in the Frontier League East Division. In the four games the Beach Bums have played at Windy City, they are 0-4 and have allowed 44 runs. It was the sixth time in the four games the Beach Bums have played at Windy City that the Thunderbolts scored more than four runs in an inning.
Traverse City jumped out to a 4-0 lead with two runs in each the third and fourth innings. An RBI-single by left fielder J.T. Hall in the third, followed by a two-run homer from designated hitter Greg Burns gave the Beach Bums a big lead early in the contest.
In the bottom of the fourth, Windy City scored three times following a pair of Beach Bums errors. An RBI-single by designated hitter Devin Shepherd and a two-run single from newly-acquired first baseman Nick Mahin cut the Windy City deficit to one at 4-3.
The Beach Bums added another run in the sixth on an RBI-single from center fielder Zack Pace to give Traverse City a 5-3 lead. In the bottom of the inning, the Thunderbolts took advantage of two more Beach Bums errors by scoring six times in an inning highlighted by a three run double by Thunderbolts center fielder Brandon Anderson off Traverse City reliever Nolan Shaffer to open up a 9-5 lead.
Windy City reliever Matt Costello (3-4) pitched 0.2 scoreless innings to earn his third win of the season. Shaffer (5-4) suffered his fourth loss after failing to retire a batter allowing four Windy City runs. With the loss, the Beach Bums fall to 31-30, while Windy City improves to 34-27 on the season.
