Southern Illinois Miners News Release

MARION, Ill. - Sam Wiley came through for his second game winning walk off hit in the last 10 days as the Miners overcame a 2-1 10th inning deficit to defeat Normal, 3-2, Wednesday night at Rent One Park. Clayton Dill picked up the win for Southern Illinois after recording the final out in the top of the 10th inning. He is now 3-0. CornBelters closer Marshall Schuler blew the save in the 10th and took the loss, falling to 1-2 on the year. He was trying for his fifth save of the year.

Normal took a 2-1 lead in the top of the 10th on Frank Martinez's RBI single off Clayton Dill. The run was charged to Ben Shivers, who allowed a leadoff single to Andrew Barbaro. Barbaro's replacement, pinch runner A.J. Miller, scored the potential game-winning run.

The Miners scratched across the first run of the game in the fifth inning on a Will Block RBI triple that scored Sean Harrell. It was Block's team-leading 38th RBI of the season, which ties him with teammate Sean Coughlin. Harrell reached base on a walk and then stole second base to get in scoring position for Block. With the swipe, Harrell is now 9-for-11 in stolen base attempts this season. Block is tied for the league lead with six triples.

The lead wouldn't last long, as Normal tied the game up, 1-1, in the sixth inning when Alvaro Ramirez blasted his second home run of the season. It was the only run surrendered by Miners starter Ryan Zink in six innings of work. Zink allowed just four hits and struck out five. He did not issue a walk.

The Miners best scoring opportunity in regulation came in the seventh inning when they loaded up the bases with nobody out. Wiley led off the inning with a single. Boomer Blanchard and Eric Suttle both dropped down sacrifice bunts and reached base on errors by first baseman Steven Alexander and pitcher Andy Mee, respectively. However, Mee induced a ground ball force play at the plate and struck out Will Block and Sean Coughlin to end the threat.

Normal starter Matt Mossey allowed just one run off four hits but left in line for the loss with two outs in the fifth inning after 105 pitches. He walked four batters and struck out three en route to the no-decision.

The Miners are now 5-1 in extra inning games this season. The win gives the Miners a nine-and-a-half game lead over Normal for the wildcard spot in the West Division with 36 games remaining on the Miners schedule.

Thursday the Miners will seek their second straight win against the CornBelters to start the homestand as David Harden (5-2, 2.76) takes the mound for Southern Illinois. Righty Tyler Lavigne (3-7, 3.40) will make the start for the CornBelters. It will be an Xtreme Theme Thursday sponsored by KFVS 12, and it will be Christmas in July.
