Grizzlies win series opening slugfest 17-10

(EVANSVILLE, Indiana) - The Gateway Grizzlies began a six game roadtrip by defeating the Evansville Otters 17-10 at Historic Bosse Field on Wednesday night.

The teams used nine total pitchers during the contest and combined for 27 runs on 26 hits.

Gateway initially held a 2-0 lead but Evansville rallied back to take the lead in the bottom of the second inning. The Otters batted around and scored five runs in the inning including a three-run homer from infielder Joe Spiers. The Evansville All-Star had four hits in the game, finished with five runs batted in, and extending his hitting streak to 13 games.

The Grizzlies would then score the next eight runs in the game and took a 10-5 lead. Despite being down, Evansville would mount a late rally.

Trailing 13-6, the Otters scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth but left the bases loaded.

Gateway scored four runs in the top of the ninth and won the game 17-10.

The Grizzlies improve to 26-34 this season as the Otters drop to 22-39.

Starter Ryan Juarez (2-1) is the winning pitcher for Gateway. The righty allowed six runs (five earned) in 5 2/3 innings. Otters' starting pitcher Kyle Eastham (0-4) receives the loss after pitching three innings and allowing eight runs.

The teams will meet again on Thursday night in the middle game of the series. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. at Historic Bosse Field.

It is Marvin Gray Bobblehead Night at the ballpark, sponsored by C.H. Robinson, with 1000 of the iconic collectibles to be given away. Fans can also come to enjoy $1 beer prices at Historic Bosse Field on Thirsty Thursday.

Right-hander Dan Marcacci (3-1, 4.13 Earned Run Average) will start for Evansville as he will be opposed by fellow righty Blake Barber (3-2, 5.23 ERA) of Gateway.
