Redbirds Hang Tight for 2-1 Win at Nashville

September 2, 2018 - Pacific Coast League (PCL) - Memphis Redbirds News Release

NASHVILLE, Tennessee - Wilfredo Tovar had a two-run double in the top of the sixth, and Jake Woodford, Tommy Layne, and Edward Mujica held the Nashville Sounds (Athletics) to four singles in a 2-1 win for the division-champion Memphis Redbirds (83-56) Sunday night in Nashville, Tenn.

The game was scoreless until Ramon Urias doubled in the sixth, and after Tommy Edman drew a walk Tovar doubled them home in what proved to be Memphis' only scoring for the night.

Woodford was solid in 6.0 innings of work, allowing one run on three hits with three strikeouts and a trio of walks. His outing was scoreless until he left the game after pitching to two batters in the bottom of the seventh, with the Sounds plating a run off reliever Layne.

After that, the rest of Layne's appearance was scoreless, and he gave way to Mujica after pitching to one batter in the ninth. Mujica promptly got a double play and a strikeout to end the ballgame and pick up his 13th save of the year.

Urias had a pair of doubles on the night.

The Redbirds' regular season finale is tomorrow at 12:05 p.m. at Nashville. Redbirds playoff tickets are on sale now and can be purchased at www.memphisredbirds.com/playoffs. The Redbirds open their home playoff slate on Friday, which is Game 3 of the first round.
