Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
NEW ORLEANS, LA - New Orleans scored twice in the 7th and twice more in the 8th, defeating the Storm Chasers 6-4 in the penultimate game of the 2018 season on Sunday night at The Shrine On Airline.
Omaha struck for 2 runs in the top of the 2nd inning. Frank Schwindel led off with a double, tying the franchise single-season record with his 37th 2-base hit of the year. Paulo Orlando then homered to left-center; it was his 11th of the year, and it was 2-0 Chasers.
Jonathan Rodriguez cut the lead to 2-1 with a home run in the bottom of the 2nd.
Parker Morin began the 3rd inning with a double, went to 3rd on a sacrifice bunt by Jack Lopez , and scored when Nicky Lopez reached on an error, making it 3-1 Omaha.
Elieser Hernandez pitched 2.2 innings in a Major League rehab appearance for New Orleans. He was charged with 3 runs (2 earned) on 5 hits, with 2 strikeouts and no walks.
In the last of the 4th, Peter O'Brien walked, JB Shuck singled, and Braxton Lee walked to load the bases. O'Brien scored when Austin Nola hit into a fielder's choice, and it was 3-2.
Arnaldo Hernandez tossed 5 innings for Omaha, allowing 2 runs, 4 hits, and 5 walks. He struck out 1.
The Chasers regained a multi-run lead in the top of the 7th. Nicky Lopez singled, and wound up at 3rd on the same play on a fielding error in center field by Braxton Lee. Frank Schwindel brought Lopez home with a groundout, putting Omaha ahead 4-2.
New Orleans rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the 7th. Austin Nola walked, Chris Diaz singled, and Peter Mooney singled to put 3 runners on base. With 2 outs, Peter O'Brien laced a 2-run single to right field, making it 4-4.
The Chasers then allowed the go-ahead run in frustrating circumstances in the last of the 8th. Jonathan Rodriguez doubled, and Braxton Lee reached on a poor bunt (as Rodriguez was thrown out at 3rd). Austin Nola singled, and Lee advanced to 3rd on a fielding error by Paulo Orlando. With 2 out, Josh Staumont (L, 2-6) was charged with a balk, bringing Lee home. Chris Bostick then singled in Nola, giving New Orleans a 6-4 lead.
Omaha native Tyler Cloyd (W, 6-5) pitched the final 4.1 innings for the Baby Cakes, earning the victory.
The Storm Chasers (65-74) will close out the 2018 season tomorrow at Noon. LHP Jake Kalish (6-6, 3.54) will be Omaha's final starting pitcher of the season, while New Orleans will counter with LHP Dillon Peters (6-7, 5.53).
