Charlotte Checkers News Release

CHARLOTTE, NC – The Charlotte Checkers entered tonight's contest with the South Carolina Stingrays having won every home game of the new year. The Stingrays had won nine straight. In three physical periods, the Rays came out stinging, winning 4-1 against Charlotte.

In the first period, the Checkers literally went toe-to-toe with their rivals to the south. After a Stingrays goal by center Kevin Spiewak, the Checkers answered as Ryan Cuthbert fed a pass to Brian Escobedo who put the puck past Stingrays goalie Maxime Daigneault. The Stingrays quickly answered with two goals by Rich Peverley and Matt Reid, making the score 3-1.

In the second period, the gloves came off three times as Checkers' Thomas Bellemare squared off with Stingray Cam McAffry. Charlotte Forward Lee Falardeau was drawn into a minor scuffle with Caryle Lewis. The period ended with yet another fist ballet from Bellemare and Robin Gomez for South Carolina. A few knuckle sandwiches and the meal was over.

In the third, the Checkers failed to answer the goals the Stingrays served up in the first period. South Carolina added one more goal from Caryle Lewis to end the game 4-1. The win marks the Stingrays' tenth in a row.

The Checkers are home again tomorrow night, hosting the Columbia Inferno at 7:00 PM.
