San Diego Gulls News Release
SAN DIEGO â Goaltender Mathieu Chouinard and left-winger Max Birbraer have both been activated from the injured list, the San Diego Gulls announced Friday afternoon. Both will be available to play in San Diego's game against the Peoria Rivermen, slated for 5:30 p.m. (PST).
The Gulls also announced Friday that netminder Trevor Koenig has been re-placed on the seven-day injured list with elbow tendonitis.
In other player news, Jonathon Shockey could be activated from the 30-day injured list this weekend, while Wes Rypien was placed on the 30-day injured reserve Sunday with a knee injury. Andrew Canzanello, who notched an assist and was a +3 in Wednesday's All-Star Game, remains with the American Hockey League's Cincinnati Mighty Ducks. He could return to the Gulls sometime next week.
Birbraer, who's missed the last three games with a shoulder sprain, was the Gulls' leading scorer when he went on the injured list. He is now second on the club with 27 points (9g, 18a), trailing only current team-leader Sylvain Deschatelets by two points. Birbraer was placed on the seven-day injured list after suffering the shoulder injury Jan. 15 against the Louisiana IceGators.
Chouinard returns to action after missing the last two games with a groin injury. In 14 appearances with the Gulls this season, he is 6-4-2 with a 2.69 goals-against average and .913 save percentage. Chouinard also played three games for Cincinnati this season, posting a 1-1-0 record with a 1.57 GAA, .947 save percentage and one shutout.
Koenig, who's already missed nine games with elbow tendonitis, was re-placed on the seven-day injured list Friday with the same injury. The veteran netminder was between the pipes Saturday, but that was his only game played since Dec. 20. In 18 games this season, Koenig is 10-6-2 with a 2.79 GAA and .904 save percentage.
Shockey, who suffered a separated shoulder Dec. 18 against the Victoria Salmon Kings, has missed San Diego's last 15 games. He has practiced with the team the last couple of weeks and could return to the lineup sometime this weekend. The veteran defenseman has three assists and 46 penalty minutes in 22 games this season.
Rypien sustained a knee injury during Saturday's game against the Pensacola Ice Pilots. The rookie forward, who has also played with the Fresno Falcons and Bakersfield Condors this season, was signed by San Diego on Jan. 19. In two games with the Gulls, Rypien has no points and 14 penalty minutes.
Canzanello, who was re-called to Cincinnati on Jan. 21, has 17 points (4g, 13a) in 30 games with the Gulls this season. The San Diego All-Star has played in three games for the Mighty Ducks, notching one assist and four penalty minutes.
The Gulls open the second half of the season with a seven-game road trip, which starts Friday night in Peoria at 5:30 p.m. (PST). San Diego will play in Dayton Saturday at 4 p.m. (PST) and then in Toledo Sunday at noon (PST). The Gulls will also play in Toledo Wednesday before playing in Wheeling (twice) and Johnstown.
