Rampage Fall in Final Minute of Overtime 3-2
February 21, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL)
San Antonio Rampage News Release
DES PLAINES, IL - In their 1,000th game as a franchise, the San Antonio Rampage (29-18-5-0) fell to the Chicago Wolves (27-19-5-1) 3-2 in overtime in front of 11,570 at Allstate Arena Saturday night. The Rampage are now 1-1-1-0 against the Wolves this season, and at the mid-way point of this year's Rodeo Road Trip, have a record of 2-3-1-0.
Wade Megan gave San Antonio an early lead at 2:40 of the first period, scoring his first goal of the season from a Chicago turnover at the blue line. The Wolves tied the game when Magnus Paajarvi passed the puck to Jeremy Welsh who tipped it past Dan Ellis at 8:39. The two teams remained knotted 1-1 into the first intermission.
Shane Harper, on a feed from Paajarvi and Pat Cannone, gave the Wolves their first lead of the night with his 22nd goal of the season at 2:49. Just 1:02 later, Garrett Wilson gave the Rampage a power-play tally, his sixth of the season, to tie the game at two, holding as the score through the end of two periods.
Neither team could light the lamp in the final 20 minutes of regulation, and for the 15th time this season, the Rampage needed additional time for a game decision. With just 0:29 seconds left in 3-on-3 overtime play, Cannone broke ahead and found the back of the net between the legs of Ellis to give Chicago a 3-2 win.
Ellis, in his 35th start, made 27 saves on 30 shots in his third overtime loss of the season.
KEY STAT Wilson, Brett Olson and Corban Knight recorded five shots and Vincent Trocheck recorded four of 33 total shots for the Rampage, who outshot their opponent for the 34th time this year.
LINEUP NOTES Knight drew back into the Rampage lineup with Rocco Grimaldi out due to a minor upper-body injury. Jesse Blacker skated as a fourth defensive pairing in place of Shayne Taker, who was a healthy scratch.
UP NEXT The Rampage finish up the season series against the Chicago Wolves tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. CT in the seventh game of the Rodeo Road Trip. The Silver and Black return home on March 7 when they take on the Iowa Wild at 7:00 p.m. Individual and season tickets can be purchased by calling a Rampage representative at 210-444-5554 or online at sarampage.com.
