Penguins Blank Bruins to Close out Homestand
February 21, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - Matt Murray made 22 saves to earn his seventh shutout of the season and Conor Sheary collected a goal and an assist as the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins wrapped up their four-game homestand with a 2-0 win over the Providence Bruins on Military Appreciation Night at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.
The two teams kept a scoreless tie going through almost two periods until Wilkes-Barre/Scranton took to a five-minute power play late in period. It looked as though the man-advantage would come and go without a goal, but Tom Kostopoulos went diving to the ice to sweep a loose puck to Scott Wilson, who buried a wrist shot from the slot for a 1-0 Penguins lead.
That would be all the offense Murray needed as he tied the Penguins team record for shutouts in a season set by Brad Thiessen in 2010-11. The 20-year-old rookie goaltender has registered shutouts in four of his last six starts, allowing the just four goals on 150 shots. Murray's shutout total is the most by a first-year goaltender in the American Hockey League since 2003-04 (Wade Dubielewicz, BRI - 9).
Sheary secured the win for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton when he tallied his team-leading 17th goal of the season - an empty-netter with 31 seconds left in regulation.
Bruins goalie Jeremy Smith matched Murray save-for-save for much of the contest, but was saddled with the loss after stopping 17-of-18 shots.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton has now registered points in 11 of its last 12 matches (9-1-1-1) and also extended its team season-best point streak to seven games (5-0-1-1).
The Penguins begin a six-game road stretch on Sunday, Feb. 22 when they battle the Hartford Wolf Pack at 3:00 p.m. Listen in on WILK Newsradio or watch online at AHL Live.
Individual tickets for all Penguins home games are available at the Mohegan Sun Arena Box Office, online at TicketMaster.com, or by calling 800-745-3000.
