Barons Set AHL Record with 12th OT Win
February 21, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Oklahoma City Barons News Release
The Oklahoma City Barons set a new AHL record for overtime wins in a season as they downed the Adirondack Flames 4-3 for their 12th sudden death victory of the year Friday night at the Cox Convention Center.
At the 1:17 mark of the extra frame, the Barons' Brandon Davidson sent a long outlet pass from the OKC zone that created a breakaway attempt for Andrew Miller. After Miller's shot was knocked away by Adirondack goalie Brad Thiessen, Bogdan Yakimov collected the rebound in the slot and fired a wrist shot past the Flames net minder to give the Barons the overtime win. The 2002-03 Chicago Wolves held the previous record for overtime wins in a season with 11.
With the Barons trailing 3-2 in the game's final minute, Matt Ford tied the game when he received a pass from Miller in the high slot and sent a wrister past Thiessen, eventually forcing overtime.
Miller finished the game with two assists and a goal, and gave the Barons an early 1-0 lead at 4:46 of the first period. On the power play with the Flames' John Ramage serving a minor for hooking, Miller rebounded a Brad Hunt shot from the point and flicked the puck past Adirondack starting goalie Joni Ortio. Ortio left the game later in the first period after suffering an injury on a collision with Yakimov in front of the Adirondack net.
Adirondack tied the game at 8:43 of the first with a power play goal of its own when Sena Acolatse took a David Wolf pass at the point and blasted a shot past Barons goalie Laurent Brossoit.
The Flames took a 2-1 lead at 17:38 of the frame when Michael Ferland skated to the left circle and blasted a slap shot over the blocker of Brossoit.
Mitch Moroz's second-career AHL goal knotted the score at two for the Barons at the 15:00 mark of the second period when he tipped a Dillon Simpson shot from the point under the pads of Thiessen.
Wolf regained the lead for Adirondack at the 8:43 mark of the third when he took a pass from Andrew Agostino in the left circle and ripped a shot that skidded through the legs of Brossoit.
Ford's game-tying goal came in his first game back after missing four straight games dating back to Feb. 7 with a lower body injury.
Yakimov became the seventh Barons player to score an overtime goal this season. With the exception of Curtis Hamilton, all other Oklahoma City overtime scorers have two goals.
Friday night's game was the 18th of 26 meetings between the two teams that has seen a game-winning goal in the third period or overtime, or has ended in a shootout.
The Barons and Flames square off again Saturday, Feb. 21 in a 7 p.m. start at the Cox Convention Center.
