February 21, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Albany Devils News Release
UTICA, NY - The Albany Devils ended a six-game skid with a 2-1 win over the Utica Comets Saturday at Utica Memorial Auditorium. Ben Thomson and Reece Scarlett each scored and Scott Clemmensen turned aside 31 shots.
The win makes Albany a perfect 6-0-0-0 all-time against Utica and the Devils improve to 23-21-4-5 on the season, while Utica, who outshot the Devils 32-23, moves to 31-15-5-1.
Defying the Odds
The game's first goal came after a misplay in the Devils zone when Dustin Jeffrey sent the puck from the goal line to Brandon DeFazio in the bottom of the left circle. DeFazio beat Clemmensen glove side for his 17th of the season, which is tied for first on the team.
Utica headed into the game with a 16-0-0-1 record when leading after the first period.
After being behind by one for nearly two periods, Brandon Burlon sent a shot in from the top of the left circle and Thomson knocked in the rebound at 17:19 of the second period for his seventh of the season. Burlon tallied his 19th assist, which is second most on the team behind Joe Whitney.
Sealing the Deal
The Devils secured their lead with a goal 4:07 into the third period. Scarlett found the puck on the right side boards and blasted a shot from the point through traffic beating Jacob Markstrom to make the score 2-1. Thomson picked up his second point of the game with an assist, and registered his second multi-point game of the season.
Clemmensen's 31 save performance was his 14th game with Albany this year, and he improves to 5-7-1 on the season.
Notables
The Devils went 0-3 on the power play and 6-6 on the penalty. Albany is 2-0-0-0 against Utica this season.
