Springfield Falcons News Release

Springfield, Mass. - The Springfield Falcons fell to the Portland Pirates, 3-2, tonight during Pink in the Rink presented by Noble Hospital at the MassMutual Center

The Falcons have dropped the first two games of the four-game series with the Pirates this season. Tonight's loss moves the Falcons to 29-19-6-0 overall with 64 points.

Springfield goaltender Scott Munroe stopped 24 of 27 shots on goal, while Portland goaltender Louis Domingue turned aside 21 of 23. The Falcons were unable to convert on one power play opportunity. The penalty kill unit shut down all three Pirates man-advantages.

After a scoreless first period, the Falcons were first to light the lamp, but were quickly followed by the opposition. Domenic Monardo ripped a shot from the right circle that was stopped by Domingue. The Pirates were unable to clear the rebound, allowing Michael Chaput to get a stick on the puck and chip it across the goal line at the 4:40 mark.

Only 11 seconds later, the Pirates responded. Darian Dziurzynski ripped a one-timer from the left point off assists from Francis Wathier and Justin Hache to tie the contest, 1-1.

Springfield went ahead again at the 12:37 mark of the second period. Corey Cowick received a feed from Luke Adam and shoveled in a backhanded shot from the right of the cage for his sixth tally of the season and first since Nov. 29 vs. Manchester. Brett Ponich picked up a point for the secondary helper.

The Pirates came back for a second time with 46 seconds remaining in the middle frame. After a battle to clear the crease, Jordan Szwarz beat Munroe from the slot and knotted the score, 2-2. Justin Hodgman and Brendan Shinnimin registered the assists.

Portland took over the lead for the first time halfway through the third period and carried a 3-2 score to the final horn. Eric Selleck threw out a centering pass from the end boards that Dziurzynski redirected for his second notch of the game.

The Falcons wrap-up their home three-in-three when they host the Albany Devils on Sunday, Feb. 22 at 3 p.m.
