Rampage Build Bears for Abused Children

December 19, 2005 - American Hockey League (AHL) - San Antonio Rampage News Release

The San Antonio Rampage hockey team will reveal their softer side as they lend a helping hand to build bears from Build-A-Bear Workshop for children at the Alamo Children's Advocacy Center (ACAC). These ferocious fighters take abuse on their body daily at their own accord every time they step on the ice. They will take time out Wednesday to provide children, who have been abused involuntarily, a sense of comfort with these cuddly companions. The players will assemble lovable Build-A-Bear Workshop bears, underwritten by the Spurs Foundation, and embellish them in hockey gear including hockey sticks, pucks and skates.

The players will also present a check to the ACAC after all bears are made.

ACAC works to restore dignity, trust and hope to children traumatized by sexual abuse. It provides client-focused services in a safe and welcoming environment that ensures the child's needs, both physical and psychological, come first. In one central location, multiple experts from agencies involved in the investigative, medical and therapeutic process(es) of child abuse cases work together as a multidisciplinary team to restore dignity, trust and hope to children traumatized by sexual abuse. This past year, ACAC served over 1,800 victims of child sexual abuse, a 59 percent increase in just two years.

The Rampage are a subsidiary of Spurs Sports & Entertainment (SS&E). The nonprofit 501(c)(3) Spurs Foundation was established to generate goodwill and financial support for economically, emotionally and/or physically disadvantaged youth in South Texas. Since its inception in 1988, the Spurs Foundation has donated $9.5 million in cash and in-kind contributions to deserving South Texas children.
