Pirates' Getzlaf named CCM Vector/AHL Player of the Week
December 19, 2005 - American Hockey League (AHL) - Portland Pirates News Release
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. ... The American Hockey League announced today that Portland Pirates center Ryan Getzlaf has been named the CCM Vector/AHL Player of the Week for the period ending December 18, 2005. In three games last week, Getzlaf recorded three goals and seven assists for 10 points as the Pirates moved into sole possession of first place in the Atlantic Division.
Getzlaf's biggest night of his young professional career came on Saturday, when he scored three goals and added three assists for a franchise-record-tying six points in Portland's 9-5 win over Albany at the Cumberland County Civic Center. Getzlaf also tallied two assists each in Friday's 4-3 win at Springfield and Sunday's 4-1 defeat of Albany, extending his scoring streak to seven games and remarkably taking over the Pirates' team scoring lead less than a month after his debut.
In recognition of his achievement, Getzlaf will be presented with an etched crystal award prior to an upcoming Pirates home game.
The 20-year-old Getzlaf was a first-round draft choice (19th overall) by Anaheim in 2003. In just 11 games since joining Portland on Nov. 22, he has tallied an amazing 25 points, ranking seventh in the league rookie scoring race and placing second among AHL rookies with 19 assists. Getzlaf, a native of Regina, Sask., picked up four goals and three assists in 16 games with Anaheim to begin his first pro season. The former WHL All-Star at Calgary and two-time World Junior Championship medalist made his pro debut with Cincinnati during the 2005 Calder Cup Playoffs.
Other nominees for CCM Vector/AHL Player of the Week include Albany left wing Ahren Nittel, Bridgeport left wing Chris Thompson, Chicago right wing Billy Tibbetts, Cleveland center Patrick Rissmiller, Hartford center Dwight Helminen, Hershey goaltender Kirk Daubenspeck, Houston center Rem Murray, Iowa goaltender Dan Ellis, Manchester goaltender Adam Hauser, Manitoba left wing Jason Jaffray, Norfolk goaltender Corey Crawford, Peoria right wing Mike Glumac, Philadelphia forward Eric Chouinard, Providence left wing Zdenek Blatny, Rochester forward Daniel Paille, Syracuse defenseman Andy Delmore, Toronto goaltender Jean-Sebastien Aubin and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton goaltender Sebastien Caron.
