Tacoma Rainiers News Release
Metairie, LA - The Tacoma Rainiers rode an early lead to a 7-2 win and a series split the New Orleans Zephyrs in front of 4,884 fans at Zephyr Field on Thursday.
Infielder Dustin Ackley set the tone for the Rainiers with a first-inning lead-off home run off the first pitch thrown in the game, giving Tacoma an early 1-0 advantage. It marked Ackley's second lead-off home run of the season and first since he went deep in his first at-bat at Fresno on April 13.
Tacoma extended their lead to an insurmountable 5-0 after scoring four runs in the second inning. Shortstop Leury Bonilla drove home Ryan Langerhans with an RBI-single to notch the first run, followed by a sacrifice fly from Matt Tuiasosopo that scored one more two batters later. Designated hitter Mike Carp rounded out the inning with a two-run double that plated Bonilla and Ackley.
Ackley ended the day going 3-for-5 and complimented his lead-off homer with three runs scored and one RBI. The infielder has hit safely in 11 of his last 12 games, batting .440 (22x50) with five doubles, three home runs and nine RBI.
In his second outing since being named Pacific Coast League Player of the Week, outfielder Mike Carp turned in a pair of hits with two RBI. He has hit .444 (16x36) with five home runs and 17 RBI over the Rainiers recent eight-game road trip.
Starter Fabio Castro (3-2) picked up his second consecutive win after holding New Orleans to one run on six hits over 5.1 innings, while walking three and fanning three.
The Rainiers (16-24) return to action at 7:05 p.m. on Thursday when the club begins an eight-game homestand with a four-game series against the Memphis Redbirds. Left-hander Luke French (0-4, 5.77) will get the start for Tacoma in search of his first win this season, with right-hander Lance Lynn slated to start for the Redbirds. The game can be heard on South Sound Sports 850-AM and streamed online at www.tacomarainiers.com.
