Express Fall in Series Finale 9-8

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Las Vegas 51s scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat the Round Rock Express 9-8 in Pacific Coast League action Tuesday afternoon at Cashman Field. The 51s (22-18) took three out of four games from the Express (24-15) in the only series of the year between the two teams.

Trailing 8-6 heading into the bottom of the ninth, pinch-hitter Dewayne Wise led off with a solo home run to right field. Following a Manny Mayorson ground-out, Mike McCoy and Brett Lawrie walked to put two runners on for Travis Snider who delivered an RBI-double to left-center to tie the game 8-8. After an intentional walk to load the bases, Express pitcher Justin Miller walked Adam Loewen to force in the game-winning run. Miller (1-1) got the loss after giving up three runs on two hits with four walks in one-third of an inning.

Las Vegas got on the board with an unearned run in the first inning. They added another run in the third to take a 2-0 lead. After the Express scored a run in the top of the fifth, the 51s answered with one run themselves in the bottom of the frame to take a 3-1 lead.

The Express scored four runs on five hits in the top of the sixth inning to take a 5-3 lead. Brian Barden and Chad Tracy had RBI-doubles, Brad Nelson had an RBI-triple and Luis Cruz added an RBI-single to plate the four runs.

Nelson, Cruz and Doug Deeds each had an RBI in the eighth inning to give the Express an 8-3 lead. The 51s answered in the bottom of the eighth with a sacrifice fly and a two-run home run by Jason Lane to bring the score to 8-6.

Danny Farquhar (2-0) did not allow a run in the ninth inning to pick up the win.

Express starter Derek Hankins went 6.0 innings allowing three runs - two earned - on four hits with one walk and five strikeouts as he did not factor into the decision.

Barden, Nelson and Cruz had three hits apiece while Tracy and Joey Butler each had two hits for the Express.

Lawrie had three hits, including a triple and a home run, with three runs scored and two RBI to lead the 51s.

After the season's second off day Wednesday, the Express open a 12-game home stand at The Dell Diamond with a four-game series against Colorado Springs. The series begins Thursday with a 7:05 p.m. CDT game time. RHP Seth McClung (2-0, 3.69 ERA) is scheduled to take the mound for the Express, while RHP Claudio Vargas (0-1, 7.71 ERA) will pitch for the Sky Sox.
