Ackley, Rainiers Earn Series Split

Dustin Ackley blasted the first pitch of game over the right field wall and the Tacoma Rainiers never looked back, breezing past the New Orleans Zephyrs 7-2 on Tuesday afternoon at Zephyr Field.

Mike Carp's two-run double highlighted a four-run second inning, when the Rainiers tacked on four more runs in the second inning, when they sent 10 batters to the plate.

Zephyrs starter Adalberto Mendez (1-5) settled down after spotting Tacoma the five-run lead, working 6 1/3 innings in suffering the loss. Other than a fielding error by Ryan Klosterman, Mendez retired 13 straight batters.

Ackley led the way for the Rainiers by going 3-for-5 with a home run and three runs scored. Ackley hit went 9-for-18 in the series, with four RBI and six runs scored.

Vinny Rottino extended his consecutive on-base streak to 24 games going 2-for-4 with an RBI double for New Orleans.

Fabio Castro (3-2) received the win for the Rainiers, going 5 1/3 innings, surrendering just one run on six hits while striking out three.

After an off day Wednesday, the Z's return to action on Thursday night as they travel to take on the Fresno Grizzlies for a four-game series at Chukchansi Park. Elih Vilanueva will get the start for New Orleans in the series opener, facing Fresno's Josh Banks. First pitch is 9:05 p.m. Central.
