Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
MOOSIC, Pa. - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders dropped a heartbreaker 5-2 to the Buffalo Bisons on Tuesday night at PNC Field. The Bisons claimed victory with three runs in the top of the ninth inning.
Pitching had the upper hand early as Nestor Cortes threw 4.0 scoreless innings to start the game for the RailRiders. In his first start of the season, the left-hander allowed four hits and did not walk a batter while striking out three.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre broke through against Buffalo pitching in the bottom of the fifth. Zack Zehner laced a two-run double to right-center, scoring Thomas Milone and Rob Brantly and handing the RailRiders a 2-0 lead.
The Bisons battled back with a solo home run in the sixth by Richard Urena, and an RBI double from Cullen Large in the seventh to tie the game at 2-2. The RailRiders threatened offensively in the seventh and eighth innings, but stranded five runners on base in the two frames.
In the top of the ninth, Buffalo took the lead on a Kevin Smith solo home run against Luis Garcia. They tacked on two more in the frame on an RBI double by Juan Graterol and a run-scoring wild pitch to open up a 5-2 advantage.
The RailRiders got a one-out single from Zack Zehner in the bottom of the ninth but nothing more against Bryan Baker. Zehner went 2-for-4 with a double and 2 RBIs for the RailRiders, his first multi-hit and multi-RBI games of the season.
Thomas Milone went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored, and has now hit in all seven games he has played with SWB. Armando Alvarez (0-for-4) and Hoy Park (0-3) saw their hitting streaks end at nine and six games, respectively.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre continues its series with Buffalo on Wednesday night at PNC Field. RHP Nick Green (0-0, 4.50) gets the start for the RailRiders, opposed by MLB rehabber RHP Thomas Hatch (0-1, 3.00) of the Bisons.
