FORT WAYNE, Ind. - TinCaps INF Connor Powers was named the Midwest League Player of the Week on Monday. He reached base in over half his plate appearances and slugged a pair of home runs during the past week.
Powers, 23, posted a .538 on-base percentage, swatted three doubles and drove in nine runs over the course of the week. On August 5 at Bowling Green, he hammered a pair of home runs in a 7-2 win. Powers also strung together a streak of five consecutive multi-hit games.
The Naperville, Ill. product was selected by the Padres in the 21st round of last year's draft out of
Mississippi State University. Powers opened this season in extended spring training and was assigned to the TinCaps' roster on June 3. He has raised his batting average to .330 entering play on Wednesday.
This is the fourth time this year a TinCap has been named MWL Player or Pitcher of the Week. RHP Keyvius Sampson received the honors the first week of the season after firing 11 scoreless innings. OF Rymer Liriano was named Player of the Week twice in a three-week stretch in late May-early June.
The TinCaps continue their seven-game homestand tonight against the Bowling Green Hot Rods (Class-A Tampa Bay Rays). First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m.
