Strong Pitching Leads Kernels To 3-1 Win Over Peoria

Peoria, IL - The Kernels got a strong start from Seth Fowler, and the bullpen shut the door through the final four innings as the Kernels topped Peoria 3-1 at O'Brien Field on Tuesday evening. Seth Fowler (1-2) went five innings for the win. He allowed one run on seven hits while striking out four and walking two.

Donn Roach pitched two innings out of the bullpen for the Kernels. He allowed no runs on two hits while striking out one. Dakota Robinson pitched a scoreless 1-2-3 eighth inning. Daniel Tillman pitched a scoreless ninth inning, picking up his tenth save of the season.

The Kernels put a run across in the first inning, taking a 1-0 lead. Back to back singles by Travis Witherspoon and Rolando Gomez put runners at the corners. Witherspoon came home on a RBI groundout by Jeremy Cruz, giving the Kernels an early lead.

Peoria tied the ballgame 1-1 in the second inning on a RBI single by Jesus Morelli that scored Anthony Giansanti. The Chiefs put a runner at third base in the third, fourth, and fifth innings, but Fowler was able to get out of the innings with no runners coming home.

The Kernels took a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning. Francis Larson doubled to deep center field to begin the inning. He then advanced to third base on a wild pitch from Peoria's starting pitcher Brett Wallach. Larson scored on a fielder's choice groundout by Jean Almanzar, giving the Kernels a one run advantage.

The Kernels added a run in the ninth inning on Larson's RBI single that scored Randal Grichuk, giving the Kernels a 3-1 advantage. Brett Wallach (0-2) started for Peoria and went five innings. He allowed two runs on three hits while striking out five and walking two.

The Kernels continue the road trip with a commuter series at Clinton beginning on Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. The Kernels return home on Saturday vs. Kane County at 6:35 p.m. Morgan Hawk brings you the action on the radio home of Kernels baseball, 1450 AM and 93.1 FM, KMRY.
