Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
Bowling Green, KY - The Bowling Green Hot Rods, Class A affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays, are proud to recognize that former Hot Rods shortstop Tim Beckham has been promoted to Class AAA Durham. The 2008 No. 1 overall pick of the Rays becomes the third former Hot Rod to advance to the top level of the minor leagues this season, joining fellow 2009 Hot Rods RHP Marquis Fleming and LHP Matt Moore.
Beckham spent his first full professional season with the Hot Rods in their inaugural campaign in the South Atlantic League in 2009. During his all-star season, Beckham finished the year with a .275 batting average, second-highest on the club despite playing the entire year at just 19 years old. He finished 2009 leading the Hot Rods in several offensive categories including hits (135), doubles (33), RBI (63), total bases (191), and extra-base hits (42). His hits and doubles totals remain single-season club records to this date.
After leaving Bowling Green, Beckham spent all of 2010 with the Charlotte Stone Crabs in the Florida State League, batting .256 with 33 extra-base hits. He stole a career-high 22 bases during the year while improving his defense by reducing his errors from 43 in 2009 to 25 last season.
The 2011 campaign saw continued growth for the now-21-year-old with the Class AA Montgomery Biscuits. He was batting .275 at the time of his promotion despite once again being one of the youngest everyday players in the Southern League. He earned special recognition by being chosen as a member of the United States Team for the 2011 XM Futures Game held during this year's Major League All-Star Break in Arizona. Beckham shined on the big stage, driving home the tying run and then scoring the winning run in the eighth inning of the US' victory over the World Team. With Montgomery, Beckham had 25 doubles, 15 steals, and a career-best seven home runs.
