Dayton Dragons News Release

Comstock Park, Mich.-Drew Poulk's two-run double off the left field fence in the top of the ninth inning broke a 3-3 tie and Drew Hayes pitched out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the ninth as the Dayton Dragons came from behind to defeat the West Michigan Whitecaps 5-3 on Wednesday night. The win was the Dragons' fourth straight and improved their second half record to 29-15.

West Michigan led 3-0 after two innings as their starting pitcher, Josue Carreno, stormed through the Dayton batting order. Carreno left after six innings without allowing a runner past first base. He allowed just two hits and no walks with nine strikeouts.

In the seventh, Donald Lutz drilled a run-scoring double to get the Dragons started, and Lutz scored on a double to right by Juan Duran. Poulk then lined a double down the right field line to bring in Duran and tie the game at 3-3.

In the ninth, Lutz singled and went to third on a one-out single by Jaren Matthews. Poulk then lined a shot off the left field fence to drive in two runs and give Dayton a 5-3 lead.

Hayes struck out the first two batters in the bottom of the ninth before yielding two singles and a walk to load the bases. But he struck out Ryan Hamme to end the game and earn his 19th save. Reliever Chad Rogers (5-4) pitched a scoreless eighth to earn the win.

The Dragons finished with eight hits. Lutz was 3 for 4. Poulk was 2 for 4 with three runs batted in.

The Dragons continue the three-game series with the Whitecaps on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. (WONE 980 AM). Stalin Gerson (4-1, 3.45) will start for Dayton against West Michigan's Brian Flynn (4-1, 3.45). The next home game is Saturday, August 13 vs. Lake County at Fifth Third Field.
