Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - A pair of home runs and a two-run triple spoiled what otherwise was an outstanding pitcher's duel on Wednesday night, as the Fort Wayne TinCaps dropped a 7-1 decision to the Bowling Green Hot Rods at Parkview Field.

Through the first six innings, Fort Wayne starting pitcher Zach Cates and the Bowling Green tandem of Enny Romero and Victor Mateo nearly matched each other pitch-for-pitch, with the only difference being a lead-off home run by Fort Wayne native Kevin Kiermaier over the wall in right field in the third inning, a shot that gave the Hot Rods a 1-0 lead.

It stayed 1-0 until the top of the seventh, when with one out, outfielder Luis Domoromo dropped a fly ball off the bat of Robby Price for a two-base error.

After walking the next batter (Mayo Acosta), Cates was replaced on the mound by Deiber Sanchez.

Todd Glaesmann greeted Sanchez with a triple into left-centerfield, scoring both Price and Acosta to make the score 3-0.

Kiermaier struck out, but Sanchez then walked both Cody Rogers and Derek Dietrich to load the bases.

Phil Wunderlich then cleared the bases by hitting a grand slam home run to make the score 7-0.

The TinCaps averted being shut out when they scored an unearned run in the eighth inning, but would be as close as they could come, as they lost to Bowling Green for the eighth time in 12 meetings this season.

Romero (3-5), picked up the win, while Cates (3-8) suffered the loss, with Mateo picking up his first career save with four solid innings of relief.

Fort Wayne will attempt to even the three-game series at a win apiece when the two teams meet again on Thursday night.

RHP Dennis O'Grady (2-0, 5.40) will be on the mound for the TinCaps, while the Hot Rods will start LHP Braulio Lara (3-9, 5.13).
