Clinton LumberKings News Release

Burlington, IA - Leads of 3-0 and 4-3 were not enough for the Clinton LumberKings on Tuesday night at Community Field as the Burlington Bees battled back twice to tie the game and won it in the bottom of the 10th on a walk-off single by Beau Taylor.

The Kings took a 1-0 lead in the first inning against Bees' right-hander Jose Macias as Carlos Ramirez singled, took third on a single by Mike McGee and scored on a two-out double to left-center by Mickey Wiswall. In the fourth inning, John Hicks grounded a single out of the reach of shortstop Wade Kirkland scoring Wiswall and Tim Morris, raising the lead to 3-0.

LumberKings' left-hander Roenis Elias, 2-0 with a 0.52 ERA in his first five outings in the Seattle Mariners' system, served up a two-run homer to Tony Thompson - the first he's allowed in his brief career - in the bottom of the fourth, cutting the lead to 3-2. The Bees tied it an inning later as Nino Leyja doubled and scored on a single by Jose Crisotomo.

Hicks added his third RBI of the night in the top of the sixth off Bees' right-hander Zach Thornton, sending a seeing-eye single into center with two outs to score Morris. That single put the Kings back ahead, 4-3.

However, Elias would yield another home run in the bottom of the sixth as Josh Whitaker lifted an opposite-field solo shot to right, tying the game at 4-4. Elias allowed four runs on five hits over 5.2 innings, walked three and struck out three in a no-decision.

Right-hander Jessie Nava turned in 2.1 scoreless innings in relief of Elias to keep the game tied and right-hander Jonathan Arias struck out the side around a John Nester double in the ninth to send the game to extras.

In the top of the 10th, McGee opened the inning with a double to left off Bees' right-hander Blake Treinen, but Stefen Romero struck out, Wiswall flied out to left and Morris struck out to end the inning.

The Bees then put together the winning run against Arias (L, 4-3) in the bottom of the10th. Tyreace House singled into center with one out, moved to second as Arias walked Royce Consigli and scored on Taylor's single past a diving Morris at first base.

Treinen (W, 1-1) worked 2.0 scoreless innings to win in relief for Burlington. Bees' starter Macias went 5.0 innings with three runs on six hits and six strikeouts. Thornton gave up a run over 3.0 innings.

Hicks finished 2-for-4 with a career-high three RBI, but it wasn't enough for the LumberKings as they finished the eight-game trip at 4-4. Still, Clinton leads Beloit by 3.0 games for the West Division Wild Card spot and trails Kane County by 3.0 games for the top playoff spot.

Thompson went 1-for-3 with his 14th home run and two RBI while Whitaker finished 1-for-4 with his 15th home run and an RBI for the Bees.

The LumberKings (23-21) head home to start a three-game series against the Cedar Rapids Kernels (18-26) tomorrow night, first pitch scheduled for 7:00 PM. Right-hander Taijuan Walker (5-5, 3.04) gets the start for Clinton against Kernels' right-hander Justin La Tempa (2-6, 4.71).
